Costumes

I recommend you read the costume rules and guidelines on Disney’s website. I have more fun in a costume but because Florida has such humid weather; I opt to wear a themed t-shirt and Minnie Ears. My kids will wear themed clothing rather than a costume. During the fall the weather can be cooler. So check weather predictions before planning your costume.

General Mickey’s Not So Scary Costume Guidelines

  • Disney reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire considered inappropriate. Or attire that could detract from the experience of other Guests.

  • All Guests may dress as their favorite character. But may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests. (please do not ask people for pictures)

  • Costumes must be family friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.

  • Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.

  • Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.

  • Guests who do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into, and/or removed from, the park unless his or her costume can be modified to meet the above standards.

Guests 13 And Under

  • Guests may wear costumes and some masks. The mask cannot cover the entire face. Eyes are must be visible.

Guests 14 And Older

  • Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.

  • Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (e.g., full-length Princess dresses)

  • Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.

  • Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable.

  • Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords and tutus. Headwear may be worn if it does not cover the face.

  • Masks of any kind may not be worn.

Pro tip consider you will walk at least three miles before picking out shoes. I always wear sneakers.

Entertainment

Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular. If you love Hocus Pocus join the Sanderson Sisters and Disney Villains for a fantastic show. Winnie, Mary, Sarash, and other villain’s will dazzle you with this musical show. Show times are TBD but there is usually one at midnight. Pro Tip attend the midnight show. The party ends at midnight. This means you can watch the show and not miss out on other entertainment. Show times are 8:30 pm, 10:45 pm, and midnight.

Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular Jack Skellington hosts as Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy as they trick-or-treat. Mickey and his friends end up at a haunted house. Where they encounter dancing skeletons, waltzing ghosts and Disney villains. Projection effects, lasers, lighting and fireworks make this fantastic show possible. I cannot wait to see the new show! Show time is 10:15 pm.

Consider Disney’s Not So Spooky Spectacular Dessert Party at Tomorrowland Terrace. This dessert party is $99 plus tax for ages 10 and older and $59 plus tax for Guests ages 3 to 9. For the additional fee you get an all you can eat dessert buffet and fireworks viewing. I have heard only wonderful things about this dessert party. I would consider it if it’s with your budget.

Mickey’s Boo To You Halloween Parade is perhaps the best Disney Halloween Parade ever. Last year Disney added an Incredibles and Buzz Lightyear floats! Do not want to miss this parade! Show times are 9:15 pm and 11:15 pm.

If you are looking for a new way to experience the Boo To You Parade, look into Cruella’s Halloween Hideaway. For $99 per person dine at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant. From 9:30 PM through 12:30 AM during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. You get to eat dinner and meet Crulella and get reserved seating for the parade. If your budget allows. This is a fun way to justify missing precious party time for a sit down dinner and get a wonderful parade spot.

Pro Tip watch the second parade on Main Street or in Fantasyland. It will be less crowded and it's easier to find a spot. Show up at least 20 mins before the parade.

Monstrous Scream-O-Ween Ball takes place in Tomorrowland. This is a dance party features your favorite Monsters Inc Characters. Be sure to stop by when you are in Tomorrowland to see your favorite Monsters Inc characters dancing. Pro Tip characters do not sign autograph books or pose for pics at dance parties. Pro tip use the Disney World app before the party to find a character and get an autograph.

Storybook Circus Disney Junior Jam is a great place to take the kids. And this year Fancy Nancy will join the Junior Jam! Kids get the chance to dance with Vampirina, Timon, and Doc Mc Stuffins too! Kids can dance and take a break from trick or treating.

Rides/Attractions

I would focus more on the hard to get FastPass attractions. Namely, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Rides with overlays like the Mad Tea Party are not worth waiting too long for. Pirates of the Caribbean depends on whether you like interactions with characters. With that said I would not skip the Pirates overlay. The Space Mountain overlay is something I would recommend. However, if the line is over 15-20 minutes skip the ride and come back later.

Big Thunder Mountain and the Jungle Cruise and other rides close for treat trails. Disney World has not announced what attractions will be open. But these attractions were open in 2019 and will probably be this year.

  • Astro Orbiter

  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

  • Space Mountain

  • Tomorrowland Speedway

  • Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover

Food

Disney World offers amazing seasonal foods. Especially at Halloween time. You can easily find treats at most counter service restaurants and candy shops. Disney Parks Blog is the best site to check for up-to-date details on Halloween themed treats. Many treats will return but since the treats are seasonal, they may change every year.

Many don’t want to spend precious party time sitting down to eat. I cannot blame them. If you opt to get reservations at a table service restaurant opt for a reservation time before 7pm. Remember the party does not start until 7. Pick up your treat bag and wristband (if already in the park) and visit the Market Street treat location. If you do this before dinner I see no issue with sitting down to eat.

If you have small children, this will give them a chance to relax and eat real food. I have noticed when we do not eat a proper dinner close to the party starting we eat too much candy and snacks.

It’s easier to get Be Our Guest or Cinderella’s Royal tables reservations during ticketed event. Visit the site for Disney World Dining. Select the night you will attend the party. Scroll down until you find a selection that says Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party dining. You must have a ticket for MNSSHP to dine there but snagging a reservation was easy.

You can easily get a reservation at Be Our Guest or Cinderella’s Royal Table. There is also dining at The Plaza Restaurant and The Crystal Palace. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party Dining is the easiest way to snag a hard to get dining reservation. I agonized over doing this myself but this is the only way my family can get a reservation at Be Our Guest so it is worth it. I made sure my reservation was before seven.

If you want to sit down to eat dinner just do it. I also suggest maximizing your party time by using mobile ordering. Pick up your food and eat while watching the parade or fireworks. This is a smart option for guests that want to experience everything the party has to offer.

Characters

The Walt Disney World app is the best way to stay up to date on which characters are greeting guests. Select characters then choose the list option. This makes finding a character much easier. Be aware some meet and greet lines can become hours long. I always say if you have to wait more than 20 minutes come back towards the end of the night. I would not wait more than 20-30 minutes.

Tips

  1. Bring your own treat bag from home. Disney provides you with a small plastic treat bag which is great. If you are planning on getting a lot of candy, you must bring your own bag from home. It’s easier than carrying several small plastic bags.

  2. Arrive early. Your party ticket allows you into the Magic Kingdom three hours before the party starts. So use that time and use it wisely.

Do not waste your 5 hours of party time doing things you could do at the Magic Kingdom anytime. Use those three hours before the party.

Use this time to dine at Cinderellas Royal Table. Or ride the Jungle Cruise and Big Thunder Mountain.

Take your Castle Pics and selfies now. Use those three hours to save you time later. Remember, once the party starts and the regular guests leave time becomes precious.

  3. Character lines can get hours long. Arrive early and be first in line. Or wait until after the fireworks.

  4. Focus on matters most and create a plan. Decide which characters are the most important ones to meet. Plan on what entertainment you want to enjoy. Pick a few snacks you have to try. Stick to doing what matters most and do whatever else you can after that.

It is hard to do everything in five hours and by picking what matters most you will not have any regrets.

  5. Dress up and have fun. Do not wear a hot costume. As I mentioned before we do not wear costumes because we’re going in August and it will be hot!

If you wear a costume choose the lightest material possible. A heavy or thick costume could make you hot and miserable. Especially if you’re wearing a wig.

I recommend Disney bounding options for creating a costume. For example go to Pinterest and type the name of the character you want to be and Disney Bound. There are so many options and you can use performance fabrics that wick moisture away.

Hot Topic and Amazon also sell Disney licensed dresses that are usually fine to wear in the heat.

Make sure whatever you wear is not too hot.

On a side note it is also ok not to wear a costume. I wear a themed shirt and headband when it is too hot.

  6. Liberty Square Market has shorter lines for Halloween treats!

  7. The candy corn cone and milkshake at Auntie Gravity’s Galactic Goodies do not taste like candy corn. If you try the cone expect it to taste like vanilla ice cream. The shake has a strong vanilla flavor with a hint of toasted marshmallow. Which is fine. However, many people expect these treats to taste like candy corn.

  8. The dance parties are the easiest way to meet characters. You will not get an autograph. They do not pose for a photo. But if you are dancing with them or near them, you can get someone in your party to snap a quick. This is how we get many of our character pictures. This is also time efficient if you want to meet characters but do not want to wait in line.

  9. The line to meet Jack and Sally can get long. I have heard up to five hours. If that happens the cast members have to close the line. To ensure everyone in line can meet Jack and Sally by midnight. If you have to meet Jack and Sally do it first. I would even line up before the party starts.

  10. The Headless Horseman is pre-parade entertainment. If you want to see him make sure you secure a parade viewing spot 15 minutes before the parade. You should also know if the ground is wet he will not come out. If the ground is wet for the first parade check and see if it is dry for the second one.

Wow, that was a lot of information! Are you excited about this year’s party? If you have questions, please comment below. Do not forget to bookmark or pin this post for future reference! Have a wonderful trip to Disney World!
