10 ways to Celebrate Christmas Socially and Distantly!

Sadly, Christmas 2020 will differ from previous years. During a pandemic, it’s hard for kids to understand why they cannot celebrate with loved ones and friends. People are trying to figure out how to celebrate Christmas, which is a tough when you are six feet apart.

This past year I learned to make the best of a terrible situation. I celebrate every holiday with my kids to give them something to look forward to and break up the monotony. This year is the year to make Christmas special and meaningful again.

This year I plan on making Christmas extra special. I plan on making sure we celebrate and have the best Christmas we’ve had. If you are looking for ways to celebrate without socializing. I have some brilliant ideas for you.

  • Try having a Christmas scavenger hunt. There are thousands of pins on Christmas Scavenger Hunts on Pinterest. Tell neighbors or friends online or via text then hold a contest to see who can complete the scavenger hunt the fastest. Everyone could chip a few dollars towards a gift card for the winner. This is done easily thanks to smartphones.

  • You could rally the neighborhood and host a social distancing Christmas costume parade. Everyone takes a turn showing off a Christmas costume. To make it safe, make sure everyone wears a mask, stays 6 feet apart and take turns strolling down the street. A volunteer should coordinate a time for each family to show off their costumes.

  • Ever been to a trunk or treat? Try doing a Christmas version, but exchange gifts or cookies this way. Decorate your trunk for Christmas and leave a table out six feet away with the gifts or cookies.

  • A virtual or outdoor movie night. There are so many wonderful family Christmas movies. I have a list of my ten favorite right here. Watch the movie together via Netflix or Disney Plus. Or if you have a projector set up stations six feet apart outdoors where friends and family can sit. You can set up a Hot Coco bar and as your friends show up, they can leave cookies at the bar for other guests to enjoy. Everyone should take turns at the Hot Coco bar and offer hand sanitizer. If you live in an area where it gets cold please opt for the virtual option.

  • Play Christmas Charades distantly via Zoom or Facetime. The host or hostess could host a game of charades easily and will act as a moderator in the game and can text the word or phrase the players need to act out. Or let the players decide what word or phrase to act out.

  • Use Facetime, Zoom, Or Facebook chat to open gifts on Christmas morning. To make it funner wear matching pajamas. You could also do this while decorating your Christmas tree to get two excuses to Facetime loved ones.

  • Have Christmas themed craft night. I love Pinterest because you can find so many fun and simple craft ideas there. Pinterest is my go to for Christmas craft projects. Everyone can choose the same project and do them virtually via Facetime or Zoom.

  • Have a virtual or neighborhood Christmas Dance competition. Crank up the Christmas music and dance. Remember to stay six feet apart and wear masks if you're doing a neighborhood one. One could set this up outside with a tape measure and some sidewalk chalk.

  • Host an Ugly Christmas Sweater competition, which could be done distantly or in a neighborhood. To make it safe, make sure everyone wears a mask, stays 6 feet apart and take turns strolling down the street.

  • Host a virtual Christmas dinner via Zoom, Skype, Facetime or whatever you like. Make a traditional Christmas dinner and eat it together. Dress up and serve like you would if you had guests over. Then box up the leftovers in meal prep containers and do a leftovers exchange by leaving them on each other’s doorsteps.

Hopefully, these ideas will help you celebrate Christmas safely this year. I know this year has been challenging if we can see or celebrate the holidays with our friends and families it will help ease the stress we all are feeling. So what are your plans this year? Have you figured out a way to celebrate Christmas while socially distancing?
